Italy's Culture Ministry Opens Call for New Museum Super-Directors

The Italian Ministry of Culture has published a long-awaited public selection for the directors of ten major state museums, including the Pinacoteca di Brera, Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Gallerie degli Uffizi, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Gallerie Estensi, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto, Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria, Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, and Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo. Candidates must be Italian or EU citizens with at least five years of managerial experience in cultural heritage, either in public administration or private companies. The application deadline is July 14, 2023, via the ministry's online portal. A commission will be formed by July 21 to review applications and select up to ten candidates per institution for interviews in October 2023 at the ministry's Rome headquarters. The commission will then propose a shortlist of three candidates per museum to the Minister and the General Director of Museums for final appointment. Directors of general-level offices will receive an annual gross salary of €149,126.79 plus up to €40,000 in performance bonuses, while non-general-level directors will earn €83,369.02 plus up to €20,000. Incumbents may only apply for a different museum to ensure rotation. Appointments last four years.
