cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage in Italy successfully retrieved 201 archaeological artifacts, valued at €10 million, that had been looted and trafficked from the U.S. These items, originating from Roman, Etruscan, Magna Graecian, and Apulian cultures spanning the 8th century BCE to the 1st century CE, were returned on December 15, 2021, by Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance at the New York Consulate General. Of the artifacts, 161 were repatriated immediately, while 40 remained on display until March 2022. This operation involved collaboration among the Carabinieri, New York County DA, FBI, and Homeland Security Investigations, following the Rome Declaration in July 2021. Culture Minister Dario Franceschini emphasized the significance of restoring cultural heritage. Key items include a pithos of Odysseus and a marble head of Emperor Septimius Severus.
