Italy Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 Sparks Controversy Over Upside-Down Boats
A consortium led by Carlo Ratti and Italo Rota has been selected to design the Italy Pavilion for Expo Dubai 2020, but the project has ignited fierce criticism. The winning proposal features three overturned boat hulls in green, white, and red, intended to symbolize Italian maritime exploration and circular architecture. Critics argue the imagery evokes migrant boat tragedies in the Mediterranean. The pavilion will occupy 3,500 square meters and rise over 25 meters tall. The jury included Fabio Dragone, Luca Molinari, and Sergio Tramonti. Second-place architect Gianluca Peluffo publicly condemned the design, calling it a 'cagata pazzesca' (crazy crap) and comparing the hulls to the Costa Concordia or migrant boats. Architect Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi criticized the competition process, recalling Bruno Zevi's refusal to serve on a jury without co-writing the brief. Davide Tommaso Ferrando called the boat metaphor 'disgusting.' The pavilion's interior will feature a 'Prologue' inspired by Italian piazzas and a 'Grand Finale' described as a cathedral of nature. Commissioner General Paolo Glisenti defended the project as showcasing Italian ingenuity. The Expo runs from October 2021 to March 2022 in Dubai.
