Italy Launches MuD Digital Museum Project Starting with Sardinia

digital · 2026-05-05

The Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, through its General Directorate of Museums and in-house company Ales, has launched MuD (Museo Digitale), a project to digitize state museums nationwide. The initiative began with the Sardinia museum hub, whose new mobile-friendly website (musei.sardegna.beniculturali.it) went live on February 20, 2018, during an event at the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Cagliari. The site offers open data, multilingual information on museums, events, history, floor plans, collections, tenders, and fundraising opportunities like Art Bonus. Giovanna Damiani, director of the Sardinia museum hub and project lead, stated the goal is to create an integrated museum system connecting institutions, businesses, and cultural entities to boost cultural, economic, and tourism benefits. The project is already underway in Lombardy and Puglia, with potential to involve over 4,000 state museums across Italy.
