Italian theater world appeals to RAI for visibility and support
A broad coalition of Italian theater professionals, including actors, directors, writers, architects, and politicians, has signed an open letter to RAI CEO Fabrizio Salini, with copies to President Sergio Mattarella and Culture Minister Dario Franceschini, urging the state broadcaster to increase its coverage of contemporary theater. The letter notes that RAI has historically documented performances but has not adequately broadcast them. It proposes airing one theatrical recording daily on thematic channels and at least one weekly on generalist channels during the pandemic. The initiative echoes a similar appeal by Stefano Massini on LA7's Piazzapulita, who argued that culture and its economic impact should be prioritized in the recovery. The signatories include prominent figures such as Renzo Piano, Massimiliano Fuksas, Paola Cortellesi, Stefano Accorsi, Alessandro Gassmann, Ferzan Ozpetek, and Dacia Maraini. The letter emphasizes that theater has been suspended for nearly three months due to health reasons, and that RAI's support could help maintain existing audiences and attract new ones when venues reopen.
