Italian State Museums Database Tracks 30 Years of Performance Data
In partnership with the Department of Business Economics at Roma Tre University, MondoMostre has released the 'Libro Bianco dei Musei Statali Italiani 1996-2023,' which examines nearly thirty years of museum activity. Edited by Cedam – Wolters Kluwer, the report draws on data from the MoMoAnalytics project, available on MondoMostre's website. The data encompasses visitor statistics, ticket sales, and income from additional services. Between 1996 and 2023, Italy's 450 state museums attracted more than 1 billion visitors, with 47% being paying guests, resulting in approximately €4.4 billion in revenue. While major museums lead in visitor numbers, the top three represent 51.89% of total visitors, leaving smaller institutions facing sustainability challenges. The study seeks to improve data quality and suggests establishing a European observatory for comparing museum performances.
