Italian State Acquires Teatro Sannazaro in Naples After Fire

The Italian Ministry of Culture has agreed to purchase the historic Teatro Sannazaro in Naples, following a devastating fire on February 17 that destroyed its dome and interior. The theater, inaugurated on December 26, 1847, was commissioned by Duke Giulio Mastrilli and designed by Fausto Niccolini. It hosted legendary performers including Eleonora Duse, Sarah Bernhardt, Ernesto Rossi, Ermete Novelli, Eduardo Scarpetta, and the De Filippo brothers. After a post-war decline, it was revived in the 1960s by Nino Veglia and Luisa Conte, becoming a hub for Neapolitan popular theater. Current artistic director Lara Sansone, Conte's niece, expanded its repertoire to include Café Chantant and cultural tourism. The acquisition was announced on March 11 after a meeting with Prefect Michele di Bari, Regional President Roberto Fico, and Mayor Gaetano Manfredi. Minister Alessandro Giuli stated the state will also provide temporary space in Palazzo Reale to ensure continuity of performances. Mayor Manfredi emphasized the collaborative effort to preserve a fundamental cultural asset for Naples and Italy.
