Italian State Acquires Palazzo Raggio in Genoa for New National Gallery Museum

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

In a move to enhance the Musei Nazionali di Genova system, the Italian Ministry of Culture has acquired Palazzo Raggio in Genoa for the Galleria Nazionale della Liguria. This purchase, which has been in the works since 2019, responds to the gallery's need for additional exhibition space, as its collection of over 200 pieces has been partially housed at Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria. The new venue will increase the available exhibition area beyond the current 4,500 square meters. Constructed in 1588 by Benedetto Lomellino, Palazzo Raggio boasts a grand staircase and features works by Domenico Piola and Gregorio De Ferrari. Alessandra Guerrini will oversee the new museum, which aims to serve as a hub for cultural activities and temporary exhibitions. Reported by Livia Montagnoli on Artribune.
