The exact number of museums in Italy is unknown, reflecting poor policy and lack of interest. Many museums are empty due to a disconnect with the city, inhabitants, and their interests. Staff often lack clear objectives or hope, exemplified by a ticket seller who had not seen a visitor in three days. Solutions require rethinking organizational and management models, moving beyond mere conservation to become living spaces. Barriers include closed doors, ticket offices that create psychological barriers, decontextualized displays, and outdated explanatory panels. A digital strategy is lacking, with museums merely transferring content online without a communication strategy. Small museums need specific organizational culture and hospitality policies, treating smallness as a distinctive feature rather than a limitation. National and regional authorities focus on reducing the number of museums or imposing uniform standards, ignoring the unique identity of small museums. The eighth National Conference of Small Museums will be held in Calimera on October 7-8, 2016, to discuss these issues.
