Italian Small Museums Lead Digital Innovation Over Larger Institutions
A 2019 survey of 115 members of the National Association of Small Museums (Associazione Nazionale Piccoli Musei) reveals that small Italian museums are more digitally active than their larger counterparts. The association, founded in 2007 and led by Giancarlo Dall'Ara, now includes over 350 institutions. According to the survey, 75% of small museums have a website, 81% of which are proprietary, compared to 47% of museums surveyed by the Observatory on Digital Innovation in Cultural Heritage. 90% are present on social networks (vs. 69% of larger museums), with 98% using Facebook, 48% on Instagram (vs. 26%), and over 70% active on at least two platforms. 12% post daily on Facebook, 52% post 1-3 times weekly; on Instagram, 11% post daily and 34% weekly. In 39% of small museums, online communication is handled by staff with digital skills (26% internal, 13% external), while 64% of larger museums lack such professionals. The data comes from the third edition of the Observatory on Digital Innovation in Cultural Heritage, published in May 2019, which showed overall growth in Italian museum digitization: websites rose from 57% to 69% (2017-2018), Facebook from 54% to 67%, and Instagram from 23% to 26%. The article argues that small museums embrace a narrative, relational approach online, prioritizing quality content and authentic experiences over commercial transactions.
