artist · 2026-04-27

Valeriano Trubbiani, an acclaimed Italian sculptor renowned for his striking metal creations, passed away at the age of 83 in Ancona. He was born in 1937 in Villa Potenza di Macerata and initially trained as a blacksmith, crafting surreal assemblages. His artistic journey transitioned from depicting farm animals in the 1960s to exploring darker motifs, including rats and surgical figures, in the 1970s. Trubbiani's work was featured in the 1972 Venice Biennale with "Lo stato d'assedio," which was noted by José Saramago. He also collaborated with Federico Fellini on the 1983 film "E la nave va." In the 1980s, his style took a playful turn, including a crucifix for Ancona's Cathedral of San Ciriaco. A 2012 retrospective at the Mole Vanvitelliana was an engaging experience for the Museo Tattile Statale Omero.
