Italian photography critic Giuliana Scimé dies at 83
Giuliana Scimé, a prominent Italian photography historian and critic, has died. Born in Milan in 1939, she earned a professorship at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1976 and taught History of Photography at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Brescia. Scimé was known for championing lesser-known photographers, bringing their work to wider audiences. She contributed to Corriere della Sera, PrintLetter (from 1979), European Photography, and Mexican magazines Foto and Fotozoom (from 1978). Her interests spanned contemporary and early 20th-century photography, painting, mixed media, and video art. In the 1980s, she curated cultural programs for RAI and worked with the photographic department of Galleria Flaviana in Locarno, Switzerland, from 1979. Her publications include 'Il fotografo. Mestiere dell’arte' (Il Saggiatore, 2002), 'Homo viator. Percorsi negli spazi dello spirito', and 'I grandi temi della fotografia – La foto sociale'. She curated monographs on Tina Modotti, Francesca Galliani, Antonio Guccione, Paolo Ielli, and Franco Fontana.
