Italian painter Giancarlo Limoni dies at 77
Giancarlo Limoni, a refined and atypical master of Italian art, died in Rome in 2025 at age 77. Born in Rome in 1947, he had a non-academic formation, active in Milan in the 1960s before becoming a collaborator and friend of Giulio Turcato in Rome. He won the Premio Termoli in 1977 with works using flame and wood, but in the early 1980s dedicated himself to painting during its international revival. Limoni was a leading figure of the Nuova Scuola Romana, closely linked to Fabio Sargentini's Galleria L'Attico. From 2000 onward, he collaborated with Francesco Moschini and A.A.M. Architettura Arte Moderna in Rome, which published a monograph on him in 2013 (Gangemi Editore). His last exhibitions include a retrospective at MACRO Testaccio in Rome (2017), "Arte accidentata" (2019) and "Dodici fantasmagorici" (2023) at L'Attico, and solo shows at Galleria TRAleVOLTE (2022) and Galleria Gino Marotta-ARATRO at the University of Molise in Campobasso (2023). Limoni's work engaged with Impressionism, Expressionism, and Art Informel, referencing masters like Turner, Monet, Permeke, Soutine, Mafai, De Staël, and Fautrier. His final cycle of "Quadri bianchi" (White Paintings) features a rich whiteness with subtle shades, depicting dense skies, gardens, ponds, and winter landscapes. His last written work, a remembrance of Turcato, will be published in the catalog for a show opening March 1 at Galleria Lombardi in Rome.
