Italian museums urged to specialize in contemporary art

opinion-review · 2026-05-04

A March 2018 analysis by The Art Newspaper compared major international exhibitions by category and country. Italy appeared with Verona (for the antiquities show "Maya: il linguaggio della bellezza") and Florence, which hosted three shows: two in Decorative Arts at Palazzo Pitti ("Tre Arazzi per un futuro museo" and "Splendida Minima") and one in Old Masters at the Galleria dell'Accademia (Giovanni dal Ponte). Daily visitor averages varied: Verona's show drew 1,373 visitors, the Florentine decorative arts exhibitions attracted 2,215 and 3,099, and the Old Masters show reached 3,443. However, the top category for daily visitors was contemporary art, averaging 5,636 (range 4,344–7,509). The contemporary art top ten featured London (with a free-admission show), Tokyo, three shows at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Paris, Brisbane, Rio de Janeiro, and again London and Bilbao. Notably, Bilbao outperformed Florence despite having fewer residents and nearly half the tourist arrivals, suggesting that specialization in contemporary art can be a strategic advantage. The article argues that Italian museums, which often prioritize historical offerings, could benefit from a greater focus on contemporary art to better meet visitor demand.
