Italian museums struggle with limited space for contemporary art

Italian museums for contemporary art in major cities like Milan, Florence, and Verona have been established but suffer from insufficient space. The Museo del Novecento in Milan is cramped within the Arengario, with only a small extension into Palazzo Reale's second floor. Temporary exhibitions at Palazzo Reale, such as those dedicated to Manzoni and Isgrò, lack organic connection to the museum. Milan's planned contemporary art museum was scaled back to the Museo delle Culture, where contemporary art appears only occasionally. The PAC functions well but without coordination with other institutions. In Florence, the new contemporary art structure is too tight for expansion, though the Museo Marini and Strozzina (currently inactive) also support contemporary art. Verona moved from Palazzo Forti to the Broletto, but space is exhausted by permanent collections; Palazzo Forti now hosts ad hoc commercial exhibitions. The Palazzo della Gran Guardia's large halls are reserved for luxury events focused on ticket and catalog sales.
