Italian museums lag behind in social media engagement and economic returns

digital · 2026-05-04

A 2016 study by the Osservatorio Innovazione Digitale nei Beni e Attività Culturali found that only 52% of Italian museums have a social media account, and just 13% are present on the three major platforms (Facebook 51%, Twitter 31%, Instagram 15%). Digital services like online catalogs, virtual tours, and free Wi-Fi are adopted by fewer than 20% of museums. The article contrasts this with international examples: the Louvre allowed Beyoncé and Jay-Z to film their video 'Apeshit' in its galleries, generating nearly 140 million YouTube views and boosting visibility for works like Marie-Guillemine Benoist's 'Portrait of a Black Woman'. The Louvre's 'Tous mécènes' fundraising campaigns, promoted via its 2 million+ followers, raised €1 million from 6,700 donors for the restoration of the Winged Victory of Samothrace and €12.5 million from 4,700 donors for the acquisition of the Table of Teschen. A PwC study shows Italy, despite having 54 UNESCO World Heritage sites (the most of any country), generates 16 times less revenue than the US (23 sites), 7 times less than the UK (31 sites), and 4 times less than France (44 sites). The article argues that social media are essential for museums to build community, engage audiences, and support fundraising, but Italian institutions remain self-referential and underutilize these tools.
