Italian Museums Hit Record Revenue of €313M in 2023, 58M Visitors

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

Italian state museums achieved record revenues of over €313 million in 2023, a 34% increase from 2022, with nearly 58 million visitors (up 23%). The previous record was set in 2019 with €71.5 million less. Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano and Museums Director General Massimo Osanna attribute the growth to the introduction of paid admission at many previously free sites, supported by the 'Musei Italiani' app launched on July 3, 2023. The app, developed with PNRR funds for accessibility, now tracks 406 national museums, with 130 offering ticket purchases. Osanna plans to expand the app to all 4,900 sites in the national museum system, including civic, diocesan, university, and private museums. The top 25 most visited museums list is led by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo with over 12 million visitors, followed by the Pantheon (including free first-half 2023 entries) and the Gallerie degli Uffizi with 5 million. Other notable entries include Castel Sant'Angelo at sixth, Museo Egizio di Torino at seventh, and Reggia di Venaria at twentieth.
