Italian Ministry Launches Project to Move 100 Masterpieces from Museum Storage to Small Museums

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

A new initiative has been launched by Rai Documentari in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) to temporarily move 100 artworks from 14 prominent museums to smaller venues. This collection features pieces from institutions such as the Gallerie Nazionali Barberini Corsini, Uffizi, Museo di Capodimonte, Museo di Brera, Galleria Borghese, Museo Archeologico di Ferrara, Museo Archeologico di Napoli, and Museo di Matera, which will be shared among 28 museums in 13 regions. The project, which aims to promote cultural heritage, adheres to the concept of "restituzione" and includes a documentary alongside "instant docs." Significant transfers involve works by Salvator Rosa and items from Caligula's ships, with the first 36 pieces anticipated by February. Minister Dario Franceschini highlighted its importance for alleviating congestion in major art cities.
