Italian Minister Proposes Museum in Former INPS Building in Terni

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano visited Terni on April 26, 2023, proposing the acquisition of the former INPS building to convert it into a museum. The building, located at Via dei Camporeali near Piazza Tacito, was designed by Cesare Bazzani in 1934 and spans over 3,000 square meters across five floors plus a basement. It was first put up for auction in 2019 with a starting price of nearly €2.5 million, managed by Invimit Sgr, a company owned by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Sangiuliano emphasized the importance of using Pnrr funds for cultural projects. Terni already hosts the CAOS museum complex, which includes the Museo Archeologico Claudia Giontella and the Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Aurelio De Felice, housed in the former SIRI industrial area. Recently, restoration began on the former gatehouse of the chemical factory to create spaces for artist residencies. Meanwhile, the Rocca Albornoz in Narni is set to open the SAM Street Art Museum on May 1, 2023. Sangiuliano has also been active in Naples, accelerating the recovery of the Real Albergo dei Poveri, an 18th-century building to be converted into a cultural hub with Pnrr funds, and supporting a proposal for a new MAXXI branch in Messina in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou.
