Italian Light Artist Massimo Uberti Dies at 58
Massimo Uberti, an Italian artist known for his neon light installations, died on April 7, 2024, at his family home in Brescia after a long battle with cancer. Born on June 9, 1966, in Brescia, he graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and began his career in the early 1990s as a member of the Spazio Lazzaro Palazzi group, now archived at the Museo del '900. Initially a painter, Uberti turned to photography before finding his medium in neon, creating linear light environments that evolved into large-scale sculptures such as 'Tendere Infinito' (2008) for the 'Dreams of the Possible City' exhibition at Fondazione Stelline in Milan. His Light Art works often drew inspiration from ideal, utopian city plans. Uberti was selected by the European Commission to lead workshops in Milan and Berlin. He held solo and group exhibitions internationally, including 'Spazio Amato' at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome (2015) and 'Today I Love You' in Amsterdam, Manchester, Ontario, Washington, Shanghai, and Dubai. In 2015, 'Drawing of Drawing' was shown during Miami Art Basel. In 2018, he created 'Prospectum' for the Winter Olympics in South Korea. In 2022, he won a MiBACT grant for contemporary art, producing 'Orbita' for Castello Gamba in Chatillon. His public work 'Città Ideale' was exhibited at the NOOR Riyadh Festival in Saudi Arabia.
