Italian League Urged to Block Bonisoli's Museum Reform

opinion-review · 2026-05-04

Massimiliano Tonelli, writing for Artribune, calls on the League party to oppose a reform by Culture Minister Alberto Bonisoli that would strip autonomy from Italy's major state museums. The reform, approved by the Council of Ministers on June 19, 2019, aims to centralize control in Rome, eliminating boards of directors and creating a centralized office for tenders and loans. Key museums such as the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Roma and the Gallerie dell'Accademia di Firenze would lose their autonomous status. League undersecretary Bergonzoni has announced opposition, and Friuli Venezia Giulia governor Fedriga has already secured an exemption for Castello di Miramare in Trieste. Tonelli argues the reform contradicts the League's decentralist principles and hopes internal government conflicts will kill it.
