Italian Independent Music Gets a Gamified Digital Museum on Spatial.io
The Italian independent music scene now has a digital museum accessible via mobile, computer, or VR, designed as a gamified virtual environment. The project, managed by the AudioCoop association and chaired by Giordano Sangiorgi (creator of the MEI – Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti), aims to preserve the memory of Italy's independent music movement. The museum is inspired by Faenza's Piazza del Popolo and divided into thematic rooms containing posters, videoclips, covers, and historical materials from 1995 to 2024. It is hosted on Spatial.io, an extended reality platform enabling real-time remote collaboration. An NFT collection of the works is available on OpenSea. The MEI festival, which started in 1995 in Faenza, has featured artists like Afterhours, Cristina Donà, and Bluvertigo. The museum is also integrated into the newly redesigned MEI website, with the 30th-anniversary celebrations planned for the first weekend of October 2025. The project's long-term goal is to become a comprehensive archive of Italy's independent music scene, highlighting its role in fostering musical diversity and quality.
