Italian Galleries at Frieze New York 2019: Mixed Results and Strategic Choices

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

During the seventh Frieze New York held on Randalls Island, a limited number of Italian galleries took part, with many opting for TEFAF Manhattan instead. Gallerists experienced differing levels of sales and visitor engagement. Alfonso Artiaco highlighted works by Juan Uslè and Ann Veronica Janssens, mentioning that geographic isolation impacted interest. Massimo De Carlo observed a significant presence from Asian collectors, featuring works by Lu Song and others, while also participating in TEFAF. Locarn O'Neill displayed Kiki Smith and reported strong sales, aligning with a Kiki Smith exhibition at the Uffizi. Cardi Gallery emphasized Arte Povera and American minimalism, and P420 showcased a body-themed presentation. Partners & Mucciaccia and Rosenfeld Porcini highlighted prominent artists, while Veda presented installations by Amitai Romm.
