Italian filmmaker Ermanno Olmi dies at 86
Ermanno Olmi, the renowned Italian filmmaker and documentary innovator, passed away in Asiago at the age of 86. He was born in Bergamo in 1931 and created documentaries for Edisonvolta, such as 'La diga sul ghiacciaio' and 'Tre fili fino a Milano'. His breakthrough came with 'Il tempo si è fermato' in 1959. The film 'Il posto' (1961) earned the critics' award at the Venice Film Festival, while 'I fidanzati' (1963) depicted the lives of the working class. His crowning achievement, 'L'albero degli zoccoli' (1978), garnered the Palme d'Or at Cannes. In 1982, he established Ipotesi Cinema and directed 'Camminacammina'.
