Italian Design Agency Proposed by Government Experts

A group of ten consultants appointed by Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage Alberto Bonisoli has presented a policy document proposing the creation of a national agency for design promotion, modeled on existing agencies in other European countries. The agency would coordinate grassroots initiatives already active across Italy, such as design weeks and cultural institutions, and provide a stable government reference point for the design sector. Emilio Genovesi, CEO of Material Connexion Italia and head of the working group, explained that the agency would not replace existing entities but rather systematize them, facilitating idea exchange and valorizing excellence. The proposal includes intermediate steps: a web platform to coordinate excellence, an annual event for sharing content and reflection, and strengthening the Italian Design Days abroad currently managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The agency would also represent Italy in international design forums and focus on emerging topics like technology and design for all, especially in health. Genovesi noted that while many countries have government design bodies, Italy lacks a dedicated structure, leading to fragmented promotion. The document suggests opening an office within the Ministry of Culture within months, but full implementation depends on ministerial decisions.
