Italian Dark Comedy 'The House' Wins Primetime Emmy Award

The House, a stop-motion animated dark comedy directed by Emma de Swaef, Marc Roels, Niki Lindroth von Bahr, and Paloma Baeza, has won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation. The award will be presented at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 3, 2022, during the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. The film, produced by Venetian animator Kecy Salangad, features a voice cast including Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Goth, and Miranda Richardson. The House is an anthology of three stories set in different eras—the 19th century, the present, and a dystopian future—all taking place within the same mysterious house. The film is known for its unsettling vividness and innovative use of stop-motion animation, a technique in which Salangad specializes. Salangad, a graduate of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, spent part of his childhood in a group home with his mother. The narrative explores themes of environmental catastrophe, culminating in an apocalyptic flood that leaves the house standing. The film is available on Netflix.
