institutional · 2026-04-27

Valentino Catricalà, born in Rome in 1984, has been appointed to the board of directors of ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, marking the first time an Italian has served in this role. The invitation came from artistic director Alistair Hudson and administrative director Helga Huskamp. Catricalà has been artistic director of MODAL at SODA – School of Digital Art in Manchester since 2021, where he explores the dialogue between technology and art. He previously founded and directed the Media Art Festival in Rome (2015) and served as art consultant for the SONY Lab in Paris. He currently co-curates the D'ORO/D'ART project with Barbara London (MoMA) in collaboration with D'ORO Collection and Marian Goodman Gallery. Catricalà is a lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University and IULM Milan, and has conducted research at Tate London and ZKM laboratories. He has a long-standing relationship with ZKM, dating back to his student years, and credits former director Peter Weibel as influential in his professional development. His publications include "The Artist as Inventor" (Rowman & Littlefield, London 2021), "Le meraviglie delle avanguardie" (Carocci, 2023), "Art and Technology In The Third Millennium" (Electa, 2020), and "Art in the Age of Ubiquitous Media" (Mimesis, VCS). In 2024, Catricalà will also contribute to MetaPan, the digital variant of PAN – Museo dell'Immagine in Naples during its renovation.
