Italian Consulate in Bangalore Wins Two Interior Design Awards

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The new Italian Consulate General in Bangalore, India, has received two prestigious design awards. The Economic Times named it "Best Commercial Interior Design Project in South India" for 2024, and the Design Awards India recognized it as the "Most Futuristic and Creative Commercial Project of 2024." The consulate, opened in October 2023 in Bangalore's Central Business District, was designed by Embassy Interiors, led by an Italian architect based in Bangalore. The interior features curvilinear walls, extensive glass, and a "ternary code" of natural materials: raw cement for walkways, marble for waiting areas, and sisal carpet for offices. Furniture was donated by major Italian design retailers including Molteni, Natuzzi, Cattelan, Tonin Casa, Calligaris, Porro, and Foscarini. Contemporary Indian art from local galleries rotates on display. The consulate serves the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu (with Pondicherry), Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, covering an area the size of France with a population of about 220 million. It supports roughly 200 Italian companies and issued 11,000 visas in its first year, aiming for 15,000 in 2025. The decision to open the consulate was made by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in late 2020, and it became fully operational three years later under Consul General Alfonso Tagliaferri.
