Italian condominium theatres inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage list

During the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, which continues until July 29, eighteen historic 'condominium theatres' in central Italy were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The nomination process, initiated in late 2021 and supported by the Marche Region, included ICOMOS inspections conducted in 2025. These theatres, constructed between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries, are located primarily in Emilia-Romagna, Marche, and Umbria, with 14 in Marche, 2 in Umbria, and 2 in Emilia-Romagna. Characterized by their horseshoe-shaped auditoriums and distinctive architectural features, all are publicly owned, except for Teatro Sociale di Amelia. Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli commended their significance as essential cultural assets. This addition brings Italy's total UNESCO sites to 62.
