Italian Cinema Crisis: Market Share Hits Historic Low at 18.6%

During the 2017 Ciné – Le giornate di Cinema in Riccione, key figures in the film industry discussed the challenges facing Italian cinema, revealing a decline in domestic market share from 29% to 18.6% compared to the previous year. ANICA's president, Francesco Rutelli, referred to this as a transitional phase. The implementation of the Franceschini law on cinema remains pending. On a positive note, Cinecittà has returned to public ownership. Giampaolo Letta from Medusa Film highlighted deficiencies in screenwriting quality, while Richard Borg of Universal Pictures criticized poor promotional efforts. Paolo Del Brocco from Rai Cinema mentioned a lack of interest among 14-21-year-olds, attributing it to high ticket prices and streaming competition. Proposed initiatives include a Disney film featuring Fabio Rovazzi and the Cinema2day project.
