Italian Artists Shine at Dorotheum's Vienna Auction
At Dorotheum's Post War and Contemporary Art auction on May 24, 2023, at Palais Dorotheum in Vienna, Italian masters achieved strong results. Top lot was Lucio Fontana's Concetto Spaziale (1956), which sold for €875,000 (estimate €700,000). Alighiero Boetti's Non Parto Non Resto (1981) reached €650,000, exceeding its high estimate. Another Boetti tapestry, L'insensata corsa della vita (1989), sold for €113,100 against a €30,000 low estimate. Works by Giuseppe Capogrossi and Carla Accardi also performed well: Capogrossi's Superficie 375 (1952-1959) fetched €208,000 (estimate €80,000), and Accardi's Luce crescente (Gialloazzurro) (1988) sold for €182,000. International artists also saw success: Heinz Mack's Untitled (2017) doubled its low estimate to €452,000, and Black Mountains (2016) exceeded its high estimate. François Morellet's light sculpture sparked a 12-minute bidding war, rising from €80,000 to €310,750. Victor Vasarely's 972 Olla (1986) sold for over €220,000. The auction featured competitive bidding driven by accessible starting prices.
