Italian Artists Return to Spotlight at 2024 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The 2024 Venice Biennale, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, marks a resurgence of Italian artists in both official and collateral events. While previous editions sidelined midcareer Italian talent, this year features numerous personal projects and exhibitions. At the Arsenale, a focus on Italian expats is displayed in an installation inspired by Lina Bo Bardi, though critics find it confusing. At the Giardini, Giulia Andreani (b. 1985) presents large-scale paintings, and Anna Maria Maiolino, awarded the Golden Lion, has a dedicated room. Other notable Italian participants include Alessandra Ferrini (also showing at Museo Novecento in Florence), Agnes Questionmark (b. 1995) via Biennale College, and the Disobedience Archive curated by Marco Scotini. Midcareer artists like Francesco Lauretta and Luigi Presicce animate the Congo Pavilion, Eva Marisaldi is at Casa Goldoni, Francesco Vezzoli references Venetian art history, Chiara Dynys is at Ca' Pesaro, Antonio Geusa brings digital art with TAEX, and Federico Solmi has a solo show at Palazzo Donà delle Rose. The article argues that post-pandemic, Italian artists are finally receiving solo museum shows in Italy, but more support is needed through residencies, international exchanges, and accessible grants to prevent them from representing other countries at the Biennale.
