Italian artist Valentina Berardinone dies at 90

Valentina Berardinone, a Neapolitan artist known for her work on memory and imprint, has died. Born in Naples with a family history spanning England and Russia, she participated in the landmark 1969 exhibition 'Campo Urbano' in Como, curated by Luciano Caramel and documented by Ugo Mulas. In the 1970s, she engaged with feminism, collaborated with Galleria di Porta Ticinese (Gigliola Rovasino), and connected with critic Lea Vergine. She made 8mm films and created 'Calchi' (casts) and wooden scales with red or black epoxy resin, exploring presence/absence. In 1978, she produced the artist's book 'L'arte dell'immagine – A mia immagine e somiglianza' with Magdalo Mussio for La Nuova Foglio. Later works included canvases escaping the frame, shown at Spaziotemporaneo and Galleria Milano with Carla Pellegrini. Her last exhibition was at Nuova Galleria Morone a few years ago. Despite failing eyesight, she remained active and visited Massimo De Carlo's new space shortly before her death.
