Italian artist Daniele Spanò projects video mapping onto Yerevan's Cascade monument
On June 4, 2019, Italian artist Daniele Spanò (Rome, 1979) presented the video mapping performance "Orbis" at the Cascade monument in Yerevan, Armenia. Curated by Isabella Indolfi, promoted by the Italian Embassy in Armenia, and supported by the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, the event attracted thousands of spectators. Spanò's work reimagined the modernist and rationalist architecture of the Cascade—a monumental limestone staircase begun during the Soviet era and completed in 2009 by Gerard Cafesjian, who transformed it into the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, a major contemporary art hub with a world-class collection. The projection explored a corner of the monument, blending its architecture with traditional Armenian decorative motifs to create eccentric geometric patterns. The circle, a recurring motif in Yerevan—from Soviet-era building decorations to the city's circular historic center—was central to the piece. The visuals were accompanied by an original electronic score by Franz Rosati, known for his visionary soundscapes.
