Italian Art Takes Over Mayfair During Frieze Week 2016

During Frieze Week 2016, several London galleries in Mayfair mounted exhibitions focused on Italian art. At Robilant + Voena, curator Francesca Pola organized Emilio Scanavino's first retrospective since his death, titled 'The Tactile Sign of Void,' featuring works from private collections including 'Matrimonio bianco' (1951), 'Omaggio al maestro' (1962), and 'Colonna vertebrale' (1964). Tornabuoni Art presented Alighiero Boetti's 'Il muro' (1972-93), a 6x3 meter collage of drawings, maps, and archive notes described by his daughter Agata as key to understanding his oeuvre. Mazzoleni Gallery's 'Angelic Spaces and Infinite Geometries,' curated by Daniela Ferrari, paired Lucio Fontana and Fausto Melotti. M&L Fine Art debuted with 'Arte programmata: Italian Kinetic from the 1960,' curated by Marco Meneguzzo, featuring works by Alviani, Anceschi, Apollonio, Biasi, Boriani, Colombo, De Vecchi, Massironi, and Varisco. Cortesi Gallery's 'Checkmate,' curated by Ilaria Bignotti, juxtaposed Giulio Paolini, Tony Cragg, Joseph Kosuth, Alighiero Boetti, Castellani, Bonalumi, Piero Dorazio, and Soto. Luxembourg & Dayan dedicated a solo show to Rodolfo Aricò, 'Line of Demarcation,' focusing on 1960-1970 works including his celebrated quadro-scultura. All exhibitions ran from October to December 2016.
