Italian art's golden decade captured in Turin photo exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A photographic exhibition in Turin revisits Italy's explosive contemporary art scene from 1967 to 1977, drawing from the documentary 'La rivoluzione siamo noi. Arte in Italia 1967-1977' (2021) directed by Ilaria Freccia with historical consultancy by Ludovico Pratesi. Produced by Istituto Luce-Cinecittà, the show features images by Claudio Abate, Mimmo Jodice, Bruno Manconi, Paolo Mussat Sartor, and Paolo Pellion di Persano, sourced from over thirty archives. The exhibition highlights three epicenters: Turin, Rome, and Naples. In Turin, gallerist Gian Enzo Sperone (opened 1964) became a hub for Pop, Minimal, Conceptual, and Arte Povera artists, with Paolo Mussat Sartor as official photographer. In Rome, Fabio Sargentini's Galleria L'Attico launched a new era on January 14, 1969, with Jannis Kounellis's horse-filled installation, documented by Claudio Abate. Critics Achille Bonito Oliva and Giulio Carlo Argan, along with patron Graziella Lonardi, fueled the scene. In Naples, gallerist Lucio Amelio (Modern Art Agency, opened 1965) attracted international artists like Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, and Cy Twombly, documented by Fabio Donato and Mimmo Jodice. The exhibition also covers the landmark 'Amalfi 68: Arte Povera più Azioni Povere' curated by Germano Celant, photographed by Bruno Manconi. The show runs at CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin.
