Italia Nostra uses Mona Lisa in anti-wind farm campaign

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Italia Nostra, the Italian heritage association, has sparked controversy by using a photomontage of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa surrounded by wind turbines to protest the Badia nel vento wind farm project. The project, proposed for Monte Loggio in Badia Tedalda on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, would feature seven 180-meter-high turbines. Italia Nostra president Antonella Caroli argues the turbines would disfigure the Alta Valmarecchia and Montefeltro area, which includes landscapes associated with Piero della Francesca and the Mona Lisa. However, environmental group Legambiente, led by Fausto Ferruzza, criticized the move as inappropriate, noting that recent studies place the Mona Lisa's landscape in the Piacenza area, not Valmarecchia. Ferruzza also pointed out Italy's failure to meet EU 2030 wind energy targets. The debate highlights tensions between heritage preservation and renewable energy development.
