ISTAT Report: Italian Museums Lost 72% of Visitors in 2020
In 2020, Italian museums and cultural sites saw a 72% drop in visitors compared to 2019, according to an ISTAT report. Despite 92% of institutions remaining at least partially open, 8% never reopened after lockdown. The survey covered 4,265 sites (3,337 museums, 295 archaeological areas, 633 monuments). Northern Italy hosts 46.2% of museums, central 28.9%, southern 24.9%. Public institutions account for 67.9%, with 69% run by local entities, 15.3% by the state, and 4.7% by regions. Among private institutions, 33.3% are associations, 21.3% foundations, 19.2% religious bodies, and 8.4% private citizens. Of open museums, 56.7% operated over five months, 28.1% three to five months, and 15.2% only two months. Central regions (61.1%), large urban centers (63.2%), and metropolitan cities (59%) had longer openings. Average open days: 116. During closures, 73% used alternative engagement: 63.6% via social media, 46.1% via dedicated web platforms, 39.1% via streaming or video interviews, and 30% offered virtual tours. The report also examined access methods, staff work modes, sanitary measures, and online services.
