Istanbul Biennial's 17th edition rescheduled to 2022 amid pandemic concerns

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Initially scheduled for September 2021, the 17th Istanbul Biennial is now set to commence on 17 September 2022 and will continue until 20 November. The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) announced this delay due to ongoing global health crises and pandemic uncertainties. Curators Ute Meta Bauer, Amar Kanwar, and David Teh, who were revealed late last year, have adopted a theme centered on dispersal and fermentation, moving away from conventional gatherings. Their curatorial statement highlights the importance of learning from natural phenomena, such as bird migration and chemical processes in the earth. The event may start prior to its official launch and extend past its scheduled conclusion, with no large finale envisioned by the curators.
