Issam Kourbaj Curates Beyond Emerging Artists Across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with Site-Specific Focus

Artist Issam Kourbaj serves as curator for Abu Dhabi Art's Beyond Emerging Artists program, which runs parallel exhibitions in both Abu Dhabi and Al Ain from November 19-23. The initiative aims to nurture local talent through funding, mentorship, and extended exhibition opportunities beyond the typical art fair duration. Kourbaj selected three participants—Maktoum Al Maktoum, Alla Abdunabi, and Salmah Almansoori—to create works responding to themes of archaeology, water, and regional heritage. The dual-location approach allows works in Al Ain to remain on view for several months, engaging both international visitors and local communities. Kourbaj emphasizes allowing artists autonomy in responding to site-specific environments rather than directing their placements. Maktoum Al Maktoum explores ancient beliefs through his practice, while Libyan-born Alla Abdunabi examines water as a universal theme connecting Al Ain to North Africa. Salmah Almansoori, from the UAE's Western Region with Bedouin heritage, creates paper sculptures from oasis trees that function as both fabric and three-dimensional forms. Kourbaj simultaneously presents his own series titled "An Eye Palimpsest" across three Al Ain locations—Al Hili Archaeological Park, Qattara Centre, and Al Ain Museum—exploring the dual meanings of the Arabic word for "eye" and "spring." The program represents Abu Dhabi Art's commitment to supporting emerging artists through international exposure opportunities.
