Israeli Artist Ruth Patir Closes Venice Biennale Pavilion Until Cease-Fire Agreement

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Ruth Patir has shuttered the Israeli pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, refusing to open her exhibition until Israel and Hamas reach a cease-fire and hostage release agreement. A printed statement taped to the pavilion door declares the artist and curators will only open when those conditions are met. Patir told the New York Times that while she hates the decision, she believes it's important, stating the Gaza conflict is 'so much bigger than me.' Her project, previously called the 'Fertility Pavilion,' was set to explore contemporary motherhood. The biennale's lead-up saw boycott calls from groups including Art Not Genocide Alliance and Strike Germany, plus an open letter signed by over 22,000 artists and cultural workers criticizing those threatening creative freedom in Italy. In February, Italy's culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano denounced boycott appeals as 'shameful,' asserting the Venice Biennale remains a space for freedom and dialogue, not censorship. This edition marks the first under Italy's populist right-wing government led by Giorgia Meloni, which in 2023 appointed right-wing journalist Pietrangelo Buttafuoco as the Biennale's new president.
