Israel Museum Reopens with $100M Renovation and Three Artist Installations

institutional · 2026-04-22

In the summer of 2010, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem reopened its doors following a $100 million renovation of its 20-acre grounds, which first welcomed visitors in 1965. The renovation unified modernist structures and established three primary sections: archaeology, Jewish culture, and fine arts. Three contemporary artists—Zvi Goldstein, Susan Hiller, and Yinka Shonibare—presented installations under the title "Artists' Choices," available until January 2011. Anish Kapoor added a significant stainless steel sculpture to the collection. Hiller curated 34 pieces that delve into themes of beauty and decay, while Shonibare showcased over 200 items reflecting earth, wind, fire, and water. Goldstein featured more than 400 objects inspired by wonder cabinets, with exhibitions lacking labels to promote direct viewer interaction and highlight cultural connections.
