Israel Alba Ramis on Waste and Architecture in Factum #2

publication · 2026-06-02

In Factum #2, architect Israel Alba Ramis reflects on his 2000 visit to Valdemingómez, a massive landfill 14 kilometers from central Madrid, where he witnessed pyramidal terraced structures formed by millions of tons of waste, reminiscent of Jørn Utzon's platforms. He argues that architects must help build a more beautiful world by recycling materials and rethinking production and consumption models. Israel Alba Estudio, founded in Madrid in 2000, is a collaborative practice in architecture, design, and landscape. Israel Alba Ramis holds a PhD from ETSAM (2015), studied at IIT Chicago (1997-1998), is a member of AEP, and currently teaches at URJC and SUNY.
