Isidoro Grünhut: The Forgotten Painter of Trieste
Isidoro Grünhut (Trieste, 1862 – Florence, 1896) was a painter from Trieste who, despite being nicknamed 'Il Gobbo' due to a childhood physical deformity, was recognized for his artistic talent. He fled home at 16 to pursue art, working for impresario Benelli creating drawings and caricatures during a tour of Italian cities, which led to a serious heart condition. Returning to Trieste in 1880, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with friends Umberto Veruda and Carlo Wostry, influenced by the portrait techniques of Franz von Lenbach and Franz Leibl. In 1886 he painted his masterpiece, 'Ritratto di Umberto Veruda,' depicting his friend in Baroque attire. He later worked in Rome thanks to a stipend from Baron Giuseppe Morpurgo, and in Florence he was hosted by Count Alessandro Lotteringhi della Stufa. In 1889, ten of his portraits were exhibited at the Sala del Colosso, praised for impeccable drawing and vigorous brushwork. After the count's death in 1895, Grünhut lost his studio and fell into poverty. He died of cardiac arrest and paralysis at age 33. Thirteen of his works are held in the permanent collection of the Museo Revoltella in Trieste.
