Ishida Mitsunari: The Bureaucrat Who Almost Became Japan's Shogun

other · 2026-05-06

Ishida Mitsunari (1559/1560–1600) was a key figure in Japan's Warring States period who nearly became shogun. Born in Omi Province (modern Shiga), he was educated at a Buddhist temple, which shaped his disciplined character. He entered the service of Toyotomi Hideyoshi after a legendary encounter where he served three cups of tea adjusted to Hideyoshi's needs. Unlike his warlord contemporaries, Mitsunari rose through administrative skill, handling logistics, supply lines, and city administration. After Hideyoshi's death in 1598, Mitsunari became the guardian of Hideyoshi's heir Hideyori and the executor of his testament, representing legitimacy. He accused Tokugawa Ieyasu of undermining the Toyotomi legacy. The rivalry culminated in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, where Mitsunari led the Western Army against Ieyasu's Eastern Army. Despite a numerical advantage and a well-laid plan, betrayal by key allies caused his defeat. Captured and executed, he accepted death calmly. Ieyasu became shogun in 1603, establishing the Tokugawa shogunate that ruled until 1868. Mitsunari is often portrayed as a villain in the FX series Shogun, but historically he was a skilled administrator and a legitimate contender for power.
