Isabelle Graw Curates Exhibition at Galerie Max Hetzler Examining Painting's Symbolic Value Amid 'Resortization'

Galerie Max Hetzler in Berlin is hosting a group exhibition titled 'In Defense of Symbolic Value: Artistic Procedures in the Resort,' curated by Isabelle Graw, which will be open until 10 June. The exhibition showcases the work of nine artists and explores Graw's idea of 'resortization,' which critiques galleries situated in exclusive areas. Featured pieces include Kerry James Marshall's 'History of Painting' from 2018, Rosemarie Trockel's 'American Wall' from 2023, Adam Pendleton's 'Untitled (WE ARE NOT)' created between 2022 and 2023, and abstract works by Albert Oehlen from 2020 and 2022. Other participating artists are Avery Singer, Valentina Liernur, and Jutta Koether. Graw's accompanying booklet elaborates on her themes, referencing her 2018 essay collection, and the exhibition challenges commercial frameworks while ensuring visibility.
