Isabella d'Este Gets a Playful Webcomic Treatment

Palazzo Ducale di Mantova has launched a webcomic titled 'ISA' dedicated to Isabella d'Este, the Renaissance marchioness known as the 'Primadonna del Rinascimento.' The project began in 2021 when the museum commissioned Rulez, a company led by Chiara Palmieri, who brought in writer Lorenzo Ghetti and illustrator Rita Petruccioli. The webcomic consists of twenty-four episodes published weekly on a dedicated platform and in print in the Gazzetta di Mantova. The first episode was released on February 12, 2022. Each episode features nine panels inspired by real historical events, verified with scientific support from Palazzo Ducale and art historian Lorenzo Bonoldi. Director Stefano L'Occaso stated the aim was a disenchanted and fun approach to a key figure in Mantua's history, without philological pedantry but based on solid historical ground. The webcomic is produced by Rulez with patronage from the Italian Ministry of Culture. After the online run, a printed volume collecting the first series plus new episodes will be distributed in bookstores and online stores. The project targets a young audience but is suitable for all, aiming to promote Palazzo Ducale and Mantuan history in an innovative way.
