Irma Blank, German-Italian pioneer of visual poetry, dies at 89

artist · 2026-04-27

Irma Blank, the German-born artist who became a key figure in visual poetry and conceptual art, died at 89. After moving to Syracuse in 1955 and later settling in Milan in the 1970s, she developed a distinctive practice that liberated writing from meaning, reducing it to pure sign and energy. Her work was featured at Documenta 6 (Kassel), the 1978 Venice Biennale, MoMA New York, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. In 2013, Galleria P420 in Bologna held a retrospective titled 'Senza Parole.' She participated in three editions of the Rome Quadriennale; in the most recent, 'FUORI' at Palazzo delle Esposizioni (2020–2021), her monumental installation 'Bleu Carnac' (1992) was a centerpiece. The work, 38 canvases forming a pulsating corridor, evoked the megalithic alignments of Carnac in Brittany. Curators Sarah Cosulich and Stefano Collicelli Cagol selected her as an emblematic figure of independent artistic visions. Umberto Croppi, president of the Quadriennale, called her loss 'a great loss' and praised her 'unique expressive force.' In her later series 'Gehen' (German for 'to go'), Blank explored movement and the body after a personal illness limited her walking. She described her creative process as moving from 'inside to outside' and later from 'foot to earth.' An interview with Luca Arnaudo on Artribune captured her reflections on time, error, and the path of signs from beginning to end.
