Irene Zundel's Geometric Abstraction Debuts in Venice

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Mexican artist Irene Zundel (Mexico City, 1958) presents recent works and the site-specific installation 'Oltre il velo dell'apparenza' at Sala Tiziano, Centro Culturale Don Orione Artigianelli in Venice. The installation comprises 1,500 threads, each tensioned by a small metal element, forming a multicolored cloud. Zundel, who won the Premio per l'arte at the Biennale del Contemporaneo di Firenze, transitioned to abstraction after experiences in design and a formative collaboration with sculptor Enrique Jally. She deconstructs rounded forms into geometric purity, starting from the triangle and recomposing it infinitely with colors from her Mexican heritage. Zundel states that her recent pieces are self-portraits reflecting a harmoniously happy moment in her life. Her work echoes influences from M.C. Escher and kinetic art masters from the Americas. The exhibition, promoted by Must Wanted Group, will travel to multiple venues in the United States after its Venice debut.
