Ircam's Manifeste 2021 Festival Champions Feminist Music

festival-fair · 2026-04-24

The Ircam's Manifeste festival in Paris, running until June 30, 2021, centers on feminist music and collaborative creation. Director Frank Madlener emphasizes that young musicians increasingly seek to work with other artists, with women now occupying a central role in every concert. The festival features composer Feliz Anne Reyes Macahis from Taytay, Philippines, whose work 'Diwata' uses an international phonetic alphabet to evoke primordial forests. Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, in residence at Radio France, performed Luca Francesconi's 'Corpo elettrico' on June 18, dancing barefoot and using an electrified violin. She also prepared a spoken-sung version of Schönberg's 'Pierrot lunaire' with director Silvia Costa, to be staged at the Aix-en-Provence festival. Artist Aliénor Dauchez collaborated with Alexandros Markeas on 'Music of Choices', an audience-driven semi-improvised happening using smartphones and three keyboards. Japanese composer Mayu Hirano set music to Teinosuke Kinugasa's silent film 'A Page of Madness' (1926), incorporating rain sounds and Noh chant. The festival also includes 'Musiques-Fictions' by Marie N'Diaye, Lydie Salvayre, and Maylis de Kerangal, where music serves spoken text.
